Elderberry Syrup: A Magical Potion for your Immune System

This year has been a whirlwind, and I fell behind on my annual tradition of making elderberry syrup before the school year started. Now, as I sit here with a cold, I can't help but thing, "Why didn't I make my syrup sooner?" But, better late than never, right? Elderberry syrup is a fantastic way to boost your immune system and help you recover from illnesses more quickly. Elderberries are packed with amazing properties that stimulate the immune system and keep you healthy.

The recipe I use comes from the wonderful folks at the Herbal Academy. Their courses are incredible, and I can’t recommend them enough. This syrup has been a lifesaver for me and my family over the past few years!

I source my herbs from places like Mountain Rose Herbs, and the honey I use is from our very own bees. Local, raw honey has some incredible properties, such as being rich in antioxidants and having antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Elderberry Syrup:

  • 1/2 c. dried elderberries

  • 3 Tbs. fresh ginger root, grated

  • 3 cinnamon sticks

  • 3 whole cloves

  • 4 c. water

  • 1 1/2 c. raw honey (I'm using the honey we harvested from our bees earlier this year!)

  1. In a pan, combine the elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and water. Cover and let simmer until reduced by half so 2 cups of liquid remain.

  2. Remove from heat. When cool enough to handle, strain and return the liquid to the pot.

  3. Add honey and stir until dissolved.

  4. Pour into jars, label, date, and refrigerate. Compost the herbs.

Doses:

  • For adults- 1 Tablespoon up to 3 times a day,

  • For children- 1 teaspoon up to 3 times a day.

I absolutely love this syrup and regret not making it earlier this year! I hope you will love it as much as I do and that it helps contribute to a healthy fall and winter for you and your loved ones.

Stay magical and healthy!
